Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 350F (175C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Spread both cans of apple pie filling evenly across the bottom of the dish, right to the corners.
  3. Stir the cinnamon through the fruit if you are using it.
  4. Scatter the dry cake mix evenly over the apples straight from the box, breaking up any lumps. Do not make up the mix and do not stir it into the fruit.
  5. Slice the cold butter thinly and lay the pieces across the whole surface so no large area of dry mix is left uncovered.
  6. Scatter the chopped nuts over the top if using.
  7. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the edges are bubbling and the top is deep golden and crisp.
  8. Let it rest 15 to 20 minutes before serving, so the fruit has time to settle.

Out of the oven it is bubbling at the edges, deep gold across the top, and soft underneath where the apples have collapsed into something close to pie filling. Break through the crisp top with a spoon and the fruit underneath is still steaming. A scoop of vanilla ice cream on a warm serving melts into the gaps almost immediately, which is the way most people end up eating it.

Why You'll Love This Apple Dump Cake

  • About ten minutes of actual work. The oven does the rest.
  • No mixing bowl, no mixer, no batter to get wrong.
  • Crisp buttery top, soft spiced apples underneath — two textures from one dish.
  • Feeds a crowd and is just as good at room temperature.
  • Pantry ingredients you can keep in the cupboard for an unplanned dessert.

What to Serve With It

Vanilla ice cream is the classic, and the temperature contrast is most of the appeal. Lightly sweetened whipped cream is a softer option. A spoonful of warm caramel sauce over the top makes it noticeably richer, so go easy if you are already serving ice cream.

Storage and Reheating

Cover and refrigerate leftovers for up to 4 days. Because of the fruit it does not keep well at room temperature overnight.

Reheat individual portions in a 325°F (160°C) oven for 10 to 15 minutes to bring the topping back; a microwave is quicker but softens the crisp top. Freezing is possible for up to 2 months, though the topping never quite returns to its original texture, so it is better eaten fresh.

Tips for Success

  • Spread both layers evenly. Uneven depth is the main cause of uneven baking.
  • Cover dry cake-mix spots with butter. Any patch the butter never reaches stays powdery.
  • Watch the edges. When they bubble steadily and the top is deep gold, it is done.
  • Let it rest 15 to 20 minutes. Straight from the oven the fruit is molten and will run off the spoon.

Variations

  • Peach or cherry pie filling in place of the apple, same method.
  • Spice cake mix instead of yellow — warmer, and good in autumn.
  • Pecans or walnuts scattered over the butter before baking.
  • Extra cinnamon stirred through the fruit for a more pronounced spice.
